February 28, 2010 -- When the clock strikes 11:59 PM tonight the NHL trading period will continue for just three days and then come to a halt Wednesday at 3 PM. At that time, all NHL trade acquisitions are put to a halt. For a Boston Bruins' team struggling to score goals, that means looking for a top-line forward who can put the puck in the net.
"Obviously, you look at the statistics, and it's our scoring," said Bruins' GM Peter Chiarelli. " It's bad, so you want to get some type of top-nine forward that has an offensive bend to his game. There's not many out there."
Last season, the Bruins acquired Mark Recchi and a 2010 second-round draft pick at the deadline from Tampa Bay for Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums in one of general manager Peter Chiarelli’s most mischievous acts of larceny. On the same day, the Bruins swapped Petteri Nokelainen to Anaheim for Steve Montador. For the first-place Bruins, Recchi and Montador, both headed for unrestricted free agency by year’s end, were considered round-out-the-roster additions that would prime the team for the playoffs.
This year, the seventh-place Bruins will need more than complementary pieces to make a postseason push. To that end, a puck-moving defenseman and a goal-scoring wing are the two upgrades they could use.
Rumor has it the B's are looking to acquire 39-year-old Anaheim right winger Teemu Selanne. Selanne has 18 goals in 37 games played this season.
