May 2, 2010 -- The Bruins announced their first piece of significantly bad post-season news on Sunday when it was revealed that Sturm had torn both major knee ligaments on the first shift of Saturday’s Eastern Conference semifinal against Philadelphia. He’s not just out for the balance of Boston’s playoff run, but the 31-year-old left could miss up to half of next season, too.
"It's unfortunate news for our hockey club and certainly for him," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "He's battled through a major injury last year, and he was really looking forward to these playoffs."
Sturm suffered a torn ACL and a torn MCL and will require surgery within 4-6 weeks. His expected recovery time is around six months. Sturm also suffered an injury to his left knee last year and missed the majority of the 2008-2009 season.
Doctors will wait 4-6 weeks for the right MCL injury to heal on its own before performing surgery on the torn ACL -- a procedure that's expected to come along with a six-month timetable for recovery. So in all it's 7-8 months of recovery time for Sturm dating back to the May 1 injury, which would put his potential return date next season in the January range.
