Bruins D-Up During Trade Deadline

March 3, 2010 -- Despite being one of the league's most offensively inept teams heading into the trading deadline, the Boston Bruins did nothing on Wednesday afternoon to pack some power into a lifeless offense.

In a pair of deadline-day trades that didn't do much to grab headlines, the Boston Bruins shipped Derek Morris to the Phoenix Coyotes for a conditional fourth-round pick. Then they acquired Dennis Seidenberg and a prospect from Florida for Byron Bitz, a minor-leaguer and Tampa Bay's second-round pick this June.

Seidenberg, a member of Germany's 2010 Olympic team, has appeared in 62 games for the Panthers this season, racking up two goals and 23 points. The defenseman currently leads the NHL in blocked shots with 179. In total, he has played 376 games in the NHL.

When addressed by the media later in the day, Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli gave his answers on why the B's did not address their scoring problems.

"I really think our group can score and we will score more," the Bruins GM optimistically spoke. "It wasn't for a lack of effort [offensive pickups], but at the end of the day we didn't add any scoring."

"I guess what you have to look at, what we looked at, is first we wanted to change the composition of our defense. I can say that was an equal priority to scoring," Chiarelli said. "And I put it as an equal priority because I feel if we change the composition of our defense, that will in itself allow us to improve from the back end out and should result in better offensive production. It allows defensemen to play in their appropriate roles and positions."
