Cannons Close in on Playoffs with Victory

July 19, 2009 – The Boston Cannons moved closer to solidifying a playoff berth as they dominated the Chicago Machine 17-10, in front of 8,074 fans at Harvard Stadium Saturday night.

Cannons attackman Ryan Boyle (Princeton ’04) earned the Bud Light MVP award for his eight-point performance, including two goals and six assists. With the win, the Cannons improved their record to 6-4.  The Machine saw their record fall to 2-7 with the loss.

The opening quarter was a very high-scoring affair, with each team collecting six goals in the frame.   The Cannons turned a four-goal run into an early 4-2 lead as midfielder Matt Poskay (Virginia ’06) netted a goal, assisted by Boyle, at 4:15, midfielder John Christmas (Virginia ’05) scored at 4:53 and attackman Sean Morris (UMass ’06) found the back of the Chicago net at 5:54.

Chicago took the lead again with a three-goal run of their own, scoring at 8:19, 9:14 and 9:29, until attackman Matt Alrich (Delaware ’04) tied the game at 5-5 with his first tally of the game at 11:38.

The second quarter brought another scoring rush, with Chicago kicking-off the action and taking a 7-6 lead at 2:13. From there, it was all Cannons as they went on a massive scoring run and collected seven unanswered goals to seize a 13-7 lead over the Machine.  Boyle posted his first goal of the game at 2:51, then assisted on Alrich’s second tally of the game, scored on the man-advantage at 3:35, before netting his second goal of the game at 6:13.

The pace slowed down as the third quarter totalled only two goals in the 15-minute segment.  Both of those goals belonged to the Cannons, with Morris collecting his third tally of the game at 4:08 and Poskay notching his second goal of the game, with a man-advantage at 13:30.

The Machine opened the fourth frame with a power-play goal at 4:26 to close the Cannons’ advantage to 15-9, but the Cannons countered with a two-point goal from Rabil at 6:23. The Machine couldn’t rally for a comeback at the end of the game, and were only able to score one goal, at 11:31, leading to a 17-10 Cannons victory.

Cannons goalie Kip Turner (Virginia ‘07) made 15 saves on the 25 shots he faced, earning the win.
