August 22, 2009 -- In their six previous appearances, the Boston Cannons had lost five times in the semifinals and once (2004) in the title game. On Saturday afternoon, the Cannons continued their misfortunes, dropping a close one to the Denver Outlaws, 11-10 in the Major League Lacrosse semifinals Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
After trailing for the majority of the game, the top-seeded Denver OutlawsBud Light Game MVP Josh Sims of the Outlaws made all the difference for Denver, scoring three back to back goals in the final period to edge past the Cannons.
With the victory, the Outlaws advanced to the MLL championship game for the second straight season and for the third time in the last four year. Denver will be going for its first MLL title Sunday afternoon against the winner of Saturday’s second semifinal between Long Island and Toronto.
Brendan Mundorf added three goals, Kyle Harrison scored twice and Jeff Sonke and Casey Cittadino each had a goal to round out the scoring for Denver.
In defeat, Matt Alrich scored four goals for Boston.
The Outlaws led 11-9 when Alrich scored with 1:09 remaining in regulation to pull the Cannons within one. Boston won the ensuing face-off, but failed to get a shot off on a fast break.
Once it got possession, Denver played keep away for the final minute and killed the clock.
