 March 1, 2010 -- After asking the San Antonio Spurs to let him go, Michael Finley(notes) is looking for a chance to be a factor on a title-contending team. The Boston Celtics are among the teams who have interest, league sources said.
San Antonio let Finley go on Monday after the 36-year-old expressed displeasure with his lack of playing time. Finley had appeared in just 25 games this season, averaging 15 minutes, 3.7 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest.
“It was a situation where the Spurs understood why Michael wanted to pursue other opportunities elsewhere,” Henry Thomas, Finley’s agent, told the Web site. “He wants to be part of the mix again. He’s a competitor who has never been in that position [of not playing] before.”
The Celtics already have guards Tony Allen, Marquis Daniels and recently-acquired Nate Robinson coming off the bench. But as Spears points out, Danny Ainge has made a habit of adding veterans down the stretch in recent seasons -- Stephon Marbury last year and P.J. Brown and Sam Cassell the year before.
Finley is a former NBA champion and has plenty of experience in big situations.
