June 4, 2010 -- Despite outslugging the Oakland Athletics, the Boston Red Sox managed to lose the series finale 9-8 in a game where two costly decisions by Sox third-base coach Tim Bogar may have been the difference.
Bogar waved home two runners who were thrown out at the plate. Victor Martinez, who has a bad big toe, was thrown out in the third inning trying to score from first on Youkilis' double to the left-center field gap. An inning later, Darnell McDonald, who had just twisted his right knee banging into the ground while diving back into first, was thrown out trying to score from second on Jeremy Hermida's single to right.
In both instances, there were no outs when Bogar waved the runners home. Rule No. 1 for a third-base coach: Don't get anybody thrown out at the plate with no outs. Fans held their breath when Bill Hall, who had four hits, led off the sixth with a double, but Jeremy Hermida hit the next pitch into the visitors' bullpen, relegating Bogar's job to offering a handshake as the runners passed.
Kurt Suzuki had two of his team's four homers as the A's hit more than two for the first time this season in a game that featured 32 hits, two injured Oakland players and two Boston runners thrown out at home.in his first two at-bats against Tim Wakefield (1-4), a solo shot in the second inning and a two-run homer in the four-run fourth. Then, with Oakland leading 7-5 in the eighth, Jack Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff hit homers on consecutive pitches by Manny Delcarmen, who began the day as the AL leader with a .128 batting average by opponents.
The Sox took two of three from the A's but dropped to 31-24 with the loss.
