July 13, 2010 -- The Associated Press and the New York Daily News, quoting a "high-placed source with the team," reports that New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died around 6:30 a.m. today in Tampa.
Steinbrenner reportedly suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to a hospital in Florida overnight Emergency crews responded to a call at Steinbrenner's home in Tampa Monday night and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he passed away.
Steinbrenner, who turned, 84 last week, has owned the Yankees since 1973 though his declining health forced him to hand over day-to-day operations of the team to his sons in 2006.
