Professor's Ramblings: Pats-Saints Welcome to the Professor’s Ramblings, a sporadically written segment where the Professor to remove a slew of thoughts from running through his head.
THE PATS & MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
1.) Will the real Saints please... Not having seen much of New Orleans on tape (outside ESPN), I wonder if this Saints team is as good as it is getting credit for. At 10-0, three of their victories have come against the Rams (1-9), the Bucs (1-9) and the Lions (2-8). The best team (record-wise) they have played? The 6-5 Philadelphia Eagles who were at the time without the services of Donovan McNabb. I don't doubt they can score with the best of them, especially at home; but let's see them try to stop one of the best offenses in the league.
2.) ONE CERTAINTY - The Patriots, playing their sixth-undefeated team this season (obviously not including Week 1), are battle-tested. With all respect to Drew Brees, when you throw in the undefeated record, the MNF atmosphere, the 10-0 hype, this is the biggest regular season game of his career. For Brady, it probably doesn't even figure into the top 10. Just another day at the office.
3.) I WONDER....if fans truly understand how rare it is that arguably one of the Top-5 quarterbacks of all-time (Brady) is throwing to Moss, one of the Top-5 receivers of all-time (not debatable). And this isn't just a New England Sports type of bias, the stats, accolades and career accomplishments back it up. Years from now when perhaps the Patriots aren't contending year-in and year-out, fans will return to a time when 30+ yard tosses dropped into an extended single-hand and were quickly pulled in by the soft-touch of the greatest red-zone receiver of all-time.
4.) MONEY IN THE BANK - Stephen Gostkowski is quietly putting together a solid NFL career. Entering his fourth season as a pro placekicker, Gostkowski's 85.088% FG accuracy ranks 3rd active and 4th all-time. And although he may not be as much as a household name as the Adam Vinatieri, Gostkowski just quietly goes about his business despite being occasionally passed over by Belichick in favor of "going for it" on fourth-down. But this guy doesn't miss often. Given the chance to win a big game (a la Vinatieri), there aren't many other kickers in the league I'd want (see Tennessee's Rob Bironas).
5.) WIN OR LOSE....Monday night, Tom Brady will tie the NFL record for consecutive games with 300+ yards in the air. The Pats offense is too reliant on the passing game for Brady to stray in a game in which he will have an abundance of opportunities to possess the ball. |
