Welker, Bodden Shine as Pats Roll JetsNovember 22, 2009 -- If Rex Ryan shed tears before Sunday's rematch with the New England Patriots, he better have ordered a shipment of Kleenex the way the Pats manhandled the Jets with a thorough 31-14 smashing.
The Pats were led on offense by the feisty Wes Welker who caught a career-high 15 passes for 192 yards, absorbing some big shots through the course of the day and continuing to power through the Jets secondary.
Unlike Jets quarterback, who felt the heat all day long, Welker didn't seem fazed by the hits he took. "I really feel OK right now," he said. "There were a few hits in there and stuff, but for the most part I feel alright."
After a 3-0 start to his career--- one that included beating the New England Patriots---Sanchez continued his drop from his early ROY nomination and no one was happier than Pats cornerback Leigh Bodden who tied a franchise record with three interceptions, one for the game's opening touchdown. The record was previously held by Asante Samuel (Nov. 26, 2006 against Chicago).
Bodden's first interception set the tone on defense for the day, as the Pats applied the pressure up front and forced the rookie to toss one into Bodden's receiving hands, giving the Patriots a 7-0 lead.
"I just played man-to-man, pressed up," Bodden said. "[Jerricho] Cotchery ran to the outside and tried to cut back in and I saw the ball and just went for it, caught it, and the rest was history."
Of the Jets top-two receivers, neither Jerricho Cotchery (3 catches, 84 yards, 1 TD) nor Braylon Edwards (1 catch, 10 yards) had a catch while Bodden was covering them.
By halftime, Bodden had gained more yards returning interceptions (60) in the first half than the Jets’ offense managed (34). Bodden now has a team-high five interceptions on the season, which ties him for the third-most in the NFL. He also has 38 tackles and a team-high 12 pass deflections.
While the Bodden-led defense dominated to tune of five forced turnovers and allowing just 226 yards of offense, Tom Brady was busy turning in his fifth-consecutive 300+ yard game, including a 4-yard touchdown to Randy Moss.
The 7-3 Pats now head to New Orleans to face an undefeated team for the second time in the past three weeks. |
