Revs Season Ends in Shutout

November 8, 2009 -- Traveling to Toyota Park, home of the Chicago Fire, with a 1-0 series lead the New England Revolution had to be feeling good. A win or tie would advance them into the MLS Cup for the fifth time in eight years and even a loss by one goal would mean an overtime period in which the teams could decide the Eastern Conference champ.

Unfortunately for the depleted Revs squad, their season came to an end as they fell 2-0 to the Chicago Fire in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Revolution beat the Fire 2-1 at Gillette, but the final result (3-2) of the aggregate goal series sent the Fire forward in the playoffs.

John Thorrington scored first for the Fire in the 35th minute assisted by Marco Pappa and Brandon Prideaux. Cuauhtemoc Blanco executed the decisive lethal strike in the 83rd minute after a misplay by Emmanuel Osei with Patrick Nyarko led to chaos in front of the net.

The Revs had one last bid in the 88th minute to bring the aggregate total to a tie, when forward Kheli Dube curled in a cross for Pat Phelan but Phelan's header skittered just inches wide of the net.

Revs keeper Matt Reis had 10 saves on a night when he was as busy as can be.
