Short-Handed Revs Take Opening Playoff Game

November 1, 2009 --  The New England Revolution have been arguably the most consistent perennial contender for the MLS Cup in the 21st century. But entering the 2009 postseason minus the services of two of the team's all-time leading scorers in Taylor Twellman and Steve Ralston, the odds were stacked against them.

But somewhere along the lines, someone forgot to tell the Revs they were the underdogs.

In the opening game of their Eastern Conference semifinal series versus the Chicago Fire, Shalrie Joseph broke a 1-1 tie in the 75th minute of play lift the Revs within one game of playing in their fifth MLS Cup in the past eight years.

Chris Rolfe opened the scoring for Chicago in 17th minute, and Emmanuel Osei tied it for New England seconds before halftime.

Rolfe capitalized when teammate Marco Pappa went down the right side and sent a wide-angled shot that Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis failed to smother. Rolfe captured it and scored to put Chicago ahead 1-0.

Two minutes into extra time, Kenny Mansally delivered a free kick that Osei deflected past Jon Busch for the tying goal.

The teams conclude the two-legged series at Toyota Park on Saturday.
